This week, Genesis Gymnastics held interactive, outdoor classes for children at Henderson Memorial Park off the 9th Line in Bradford.
Owner Donna Katz set up an outdoor circuit of balance beams and tumbler mats on the grass at the park for kids to enjoy a relaxed, instructional class.
Katz and her assistant Amy Thompson guided children through somersaults, cartwheels, and handstands while engaging in light movements such as jumping jacks and stretching.
“I felt it went so amazing,” says Katz.

Technology has taken a toll on our kids.
They’re more sedentary than ever. Many don’t get anywhere near the minimum one hour of daily exercise physicians recommend.
According to the Canadian Pediatric Society, research consistently shows that screen use can adversely affect weight and sleep. Earlier this year, the group suggested kids have less than two hours of recreational screen time each day….
“Our kids are not getting enough physical education in school, and that’s where I developed a love for the sport, as well as a passion for physical fitness,” says Donna Katz, owner and managing director of Genesis Gymnastics. A gymnast most of her life, Katz ran a competitive and recreational gymnastics program for 13 years before opening up shop in Bradford.

On the floor in front of me is a long, bouncy tumble track, essentially a rectangular trampoline, with a large pit at the opposite end filled with blue foam squares.
In a minute, I will be expected to do some kind of display of gymnastics down the track in front of a crowd.
Did I mention the last time I did gymnastics was more than 20 years ago?
“No pressure,” said Donna Katz, with a smile. She owns Genesis Gymnastics in Bradford West Gwillimbury, where I am getting a first-hand look at the business.
